How to mount a front starter so that it has the proper distance between ring gear and starter gear
This posted by Phil Maxon.
- Use a small screwdriver to extend the starter gear to its maximum travel and mesh it with the ring gear
- Use a 1/16 drill bit in the tooth of the ring gear to set some spacing between the two gears
- Ensure you you have full engagement of the starter gear in the ring gear
- Fabricate a brace to bolt to the top of the starter
- Clamp everything in place
- Disable the engine from starting and test it
- The starter may not fully disengage from the ring gear, since the motion of the engine normally outruns the starter motor allowing the starter gear to retract. To test it, move the ring gear forward manually slightly to see if the starter disengages. If it doesn't - reset the starter until it is free.
- Drill the bracket you made for final placement.
- Fabricate a tail bracket from 1/8" angle to keep the starter from bucking in case of a misfire on start up.
