Lifters

When reinstalling lifters during reassembly of the Corvair engine, the preloading of 3/4 of a turn is needed from the adjuster nut . The purpose is to position the lifter push rod socket to the center of it's travel. The push rod socket's travel is about 3/32 of an inch in total and half of that is about 3/4 turn with the adjuster nut. In the event that the lifters are full of oil, adjust the lash in a two-step process to purge the excess oil or else the dimension will be incorrect. First adjust the rockers so the lash is zero with no additional 3/4 in turn to the adjuster nut. In the second step, rotate the engine by hand several turns. Because there is no engine oil pressure, the lifters will purge any excess oil using valve spring pressure. Then repeat the adjusting process as normal. With the crank in the proper position for each cylinder, back off each rocker nut until it is loose, then tighten to find the zero lash point and add the 3/4 turn.
