Removing galley plugs

RonMilan posted this to the CorvairListServe in response to a question about how to remove a galley plug.

Snap On makes a pipe plug driver set of square drive sockets that includes the one quarter inch (¼") size. The part number for the ¼" size is (PPM408). The ¼" is driven by a 3/8" drive tool and fits better than the male ¼" ratchet or extension end. Some of these plugs are more easily removed than others. In addition, remember that the pipe plugs themselves are expendable; the engine cases are the important part to salvage. Heat from a propane torch can be helpful. Galvanic activity between the steel plug and the aluminum case can nearly weld the pipe plug into the engine case. Such a circumstance may require you to re-chase the threads with a pipe tap. New pipe plugs in square drive or Allen drive are available from most local hardware stores and Clark's can also supply new plugs.

tip Place the removed plugs somewhere in plain sight or create some other effective reminder to replace them prior to engine assembly. Also remember to use thread compound on the reassembly of these plugs back into the case after final case cleaning
